Try using this method as a starter activity to review previous learning. It creates an opportunity for the learners to have some 'head space' so they can then contribute actively and confidently.

Nice one. I have been trying this technique out over the last term. I find that getting the students to write down their grasp of a topic or task at the start of a lesson helps to bring focus to the workshop. It can help shift the emphasis from passive to proactive learning.
great to see such a simple resource utilised so effectivly Busi, thanks for the info
Thanks Dan! I also find posted notes a very good way of finding out or assessing how much each learner has learnt from my lesson that day. It is also a way of assessing my own teaching, to reflect on how much teaching and learning has actually taken place in that lesson and if there are pointers that I might need to include in my planning for the next lesson as starters or clarifications.
Good idea Lynda, thanks for sharing
I find post it notes useful to use when carrying out assignment support sessions - 1 to each learner, listing what the student aims to be doing within the session. Helps keep learners on tasks and enables me to assess what they are doing/have done in the lesson.
